Default RDM and Dimmers

Hi All,

We’re starting to look at implementing RDM in some of our dimmers and controllers. However the RDM specification doesn’t seem to include any definitions for setting up the following on dimmer channels:

- Preheat
- Topset
- Curves
- DMX Fail behaviour (hold, fade to black, fade to preset)

Since these are pretty standard dimmer features from many manufacturers, it doesn’t seem to be the right thing to do, for us to use manufacturer specific definitions to implement control of these features. The RDM specification defines much for moving lights (prism, strobe, pan, tilt etc), but seems to overlook good old fashioned dimmers.

Any thoughts on the best way to proceed would be welcome.

Thanks,

Paul,

We had a few dimmer specific messages in early drafts of the Standard, but they were found to be inadequate and there was a desire to greatly expand on them.

The decision was that we would release an addendum with the additional message sets specific to dimmers shortly after releasing the core document. However, there hasn't been a lot of progress on this as there hasn't been much activity from dimmer manufacturers participating in this effort.

We are very willing and able to add standardized messages for dimmers to the protocol, what we need is some folks with the "fire in the belly" as it were to help make it happen.

Please let me know if you might be interested in helping this effort.

Thanks.
Scott

Hello There
We would like also participate on RDM in our product - Is there any final drawing of RDM specially for use in Dimming units?

Thank for feedback.

bluetooth,

Paul and the guys at Zero88 drafted an excellant document that is serving as a good starting point for defining some dimmer-specific messages. It will be quite a while until these are complete as the Standards process is not the fastest thing.

Most of the generic messages that dimmers would need are in the core standard already though (DMX Address, Sensors, Errors/Warnings, etc..)

Are there some specific messages or behaviors you see missing that you need?
