Here's an interesting idea for RS485 networking. It's a transceiver you can cross wire and still have your system function.

You will have to be able to recognize bad data as the result of crossed wires but these http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folder...65hvd1794.html will let you swap wires on chip.
