Default RDM Protocol as Home Automation Protocol

Hello to you all,

my name is Joakim and I am a microwave R&D engineer from Sweden.

I'm looking at implementing a homemade home automation system and after reading about RDM I think this protocol is very suitable also for home automation.

What is your reflections on a thought like this?

It is a good thought if kept to the lighting systems that RDM was designed for. There are a few applications that could also use RDM for gathering sensor data, but I would not go beyond that. For example, the HVAC of a home could use RDM to gather data from temperature sensors, but I would not use RDM to control a furnace. What I would suggest is using a dry contact or other means to signal the HVAC system, and let their controls do the rest.
