How to obtain Manufacturer's ID

We are working on some high-intensity LED fixtures and would like to implement the bidirectional DMX/RDM protocol. How do we obtain a Manufacturer's ID to use for the UID? I realize that for prototyping we can probably assign an arbitrary value, which can easily be changed when necessary, but I'm just curious as to how the assignment process works.
