View Full Version : Inexpensive RDM Sniffer

Last weekend, Simon developed a tool for Open Lighting Architecture that used the Saleae Logic as an rdm sniffer. It works great but really needs to have an RS485 driver to translate to TTL so the bits will get sampled correctly.

I planned on creating such a board and a small enclosure to house the board. I plan on it having an a Male and Female 5 pin XLR, and a few connection points for the logic. It will be powered off the USB 5V but the RDM input will be isolated from the supply.

These will probably sell for $50. I just wanted to gauge any interest. They should be done by Plugfest.

Comments? Criticisms? Snide Remarks?

If you want to check out the code and test it, instructions are located at http://opendmx.net/index.php/Download_%26_Install_OLA.

Simon did a write up on how it works here:

More features to be added to the sniffer tool later.

Very cool Sean! I'm sure we're interested in one here. You just have to create a receipt for me so I can expense it then! :)

For These, who can't or won't do the Compiler run: are there binaries available?
Nice Project, Anyhow.

The rdm sniffer will show up in the next set of debs. It was added after the last round. Keep checking back, I'll try to update this thread next release.

Hey guys

Here is an update on the sniffer board.

Milton Davis took the time to layout the board for us! Thanks Milton!

It looks like I won't be able to get an enclosure for it now. I have a schematic and pcb layout if you want to look at it before purchasing. I would really appreciate pre orders. Just PM me, and I can get you what ever information you want.
